Short answer: This list covers 22 established festivals where street performers play, from Ferrara and Linz in summer to the Daidogei World Cup in Japan in autumn. Most open applications months ahead, so plan a season in advance.
What a busking festival is
A busking festival fills a town centre with street performers for a few days: musicians, circle shows, jugglers, living statues and street theatre. Some invite a programme of acts and pay them, some run an open programme where performers play for the hat, and many do both.
For a busker it is a chance to play to bigger crowds than usual, meet other performers and earn more in a weekend than in a normal week. Audiences come expecting to watch and to tip.
How to take part
- Apply early. Most festivals open applications months before the event, often over the winter before a summer festival.
- Send a short video. Organisers usually ask for a recent clip of a real street set, not a studio recording.
- Read the terms. Check whether the festival pays a fee, covers travel or lodging, or works on hat collections only.
- Bring a cashless option. Festival crowds include many visitors with no local coins, so a QR code sign for card tips helps. See cashless busking.

Common questions
When do busking festivals take applications?
Usually months before the event. Summer festivals in Europe often take applications over the winter, so look at the festival site in November to January.
Do busking festivals pay performers?
Some pay invited acts a fee and may cover travel or lodging, while open programmes usually work on hat collections. Each festival explains its terms on its own site.
Can I just turn up and play at a busking festival?
Some festivals have open or free zones, but most programme their acts in advance. Check the festival rules before you go, because playing outside them can get you moved on.
How do I take tips from festival crowds without cash?
Put a QR code sign beside your pitch so people can tip by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay from their phone. Many festival visitors are tourists with no local coins.
