Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about receiving, sending and managing tips.

General

What is TipIns?

TipIns is the easiest way to send and receive tips. Share your QR code or tip link, and anyone can tip you instantly with their card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. No app needed on their side.

Is TipIns free to use?

Downloading and using TipIns is free. A 10% platform fee plus a small payment processing fee applies to each tip. When the sender covers the fees, which is the default, the recipient receives the full tip. Senders can opt out, in which case the fees come out of the tip.

How do I receive tips?

Complete identity verification, then share your QR code from the QR tab or your tip link. Tips appear instantly in your activity feed and are paid out to your bank account on your weekly payout.

Does the person tipping me need the app?

No. Only the person receiving tips needs TipIns. Your customer simply scans your QR code (or opens your tip link) with their phone camera, which opens a secure web page where they choose an amount and pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay or card. No app download, no sign-up, no account required.

How do I withdraw my tips?

Payouts run once a week. Balances of A$25 or more are paid out automatically to your connected bank account; anything smaller rolls over to the following week, and is released automatically after 90 days. You can request an instant payout at any time for a fee.

Account

How do I change my password?

Go to Profile → Account & Security → Change Password. If you've forgotten it, use "Forgot password" on the sign-in screen to get a reset code by email.

How do I change my username?

Go to Profile → Edit Profile. Note that your tip link and printed QR codes use your username, so changing it will stop old codes and links from working.

How do I delete my account?

Go to Profile → Account & Security → Delete Account. This permanently removes your account and personal data, and cannot be undone. See our account deletion page for details.

Groups

How do groups work?

A group shares one QR code and tip link. Tips sent to the group are split automatically between members based on the group's distribution settings, and each member's share lands in their own account.

How are tips distributed in groups?

Groups can split tips equally, or the owner can set custom percentages per member. Each member receives their share directly, and it appears in their own activity feed.

Who can manage a group?

The owner can edit settings, manage members and transfer ownership. Admins can invite members, approve requests and manage shifts. Every member can view group activity and insights.

Can members invite other people?

Yes. Anyone in the group can send an invitation. What differs is what happens next: someone invited by the owner or an admin joins as soon as they accept, while someone invited by a member waits for an admin to approve them. The group can grow without any one person deciding who earns from it.

How do I stop strangers joining my group?

Turn on "Approve join requests" in Group Settings. Anyone who finds your QR code or link and asks to join then waits for an admin. People you invite directly are unaffected.

Active shifts

What are active shifts?

Active shifts share tips only between the people actually working. Instead of every member earning a share around the clock, staff start a shift when they come on and stop earning when it ends. Built for venues where the team changes through the day.

How do I turn shifts on?

Owners and admins switch on "Require active shifts" in Group Settings. It's off by default, because turning it on changes who gets paid, and everyone in the group is notified when you do. Shifts are available for equal-split groups; groups that divide tips by fixed percentage don't use them.

How does a shift start and end?

Tap Start Shift and choose 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 or 12 hours, a specific end time, or leave it open until you finish. Owners and admins go active straight away; everyone else waits for an admin to approve. You're warned about 15 minutes before a shift expires so you can extend it, and you can end one early at any time.

Who gets a tip when shifts are on?

Whoever is on shift at the exact moment the tip arrives. If two people are on shift and a $20 tip comes in, they get $10 each. Someone starting a shift a minute later gets nothing from that tip. The split is recorded permanently against the tip, so later changes to shifts or membership never alter what a past tip paid out.

What if nobody is on shift?

The tip is shared between all members, exactly as it would be with shifts turned off. A customer should never see an error because the team forgot to clock in, and turning away a tip helps nobody.

Payouts

When do I get paid?

Payouts run weekly. Everyone is paid in the same run, so the exact day depends on your time zone. Balances of A$25 or more go out automatically; anything smaller rolls over and is released automatically after 90 days regardless of size.

What is an instant payout?

If you don't want to wait for the weekly run, you can move your available balance to your bank straight away for a 2% + $1.00 fee. It's available in most countries we support, and the app hides the option where it isn't offered. How quickly the money lands is up to your bank.

How do I change the bank account I'm paid into?

Go to Profile → Payment Details, which opens your Stripe account where bank details are managed. TipIns never sees or stores your bank details.
