Busking auditions and transit programmes

Short answer: Most cities do not audition buskers, but some of the busiest pitches do: Brisbane's city malls, the London Underground, Toronto's TTC, Singapore's National Arts Council and Barcelona's street music programme all choose performers by audition. Auditions often run only once a year or less, and some are limited to local residents, so check dates well before you plan to play.

Why some places audition buskers

An audition is a way of rationing a limited number of good pitches. Transit systems and busy pedestrian malls have only so many safe spots, and the operators want acts that suit a crowded, echoing space. Where a city runs an audition, it usually gives you something in return: a marked pitch, a booking system or a badge that tells security you are allowed to be there.

Most street busking does not work like this. Many cities have a simple permit with no audition, and some need nothing at all. The world busking map shows the permit status for about 150 cities.

Some programmes use a recording instead of a live audition. Perth asks for a link to a video filmed in the last six months, Melbourne asks for a link or video of your act, and Hobart asks for a sample of your work.

Transit and subway programmes

Underground stations are where auditions are most common. These are the programmes confirmed in our data:

  • London Underground: busking is only allowed for performers licensed through TfL's audition-based scheme, on marked pitches. TfL said the next auditions were expected in late 2026. See busking in London.
  • Toronto TTC, Underground Sounds: 89 licences by audition every three years for Ontario residents aged 18 or over, playing at 29 designated subway spaces. The current term runs to 28 April 2027 and the TTC has said the next cycle will be in 2027. See busking in Toronto.
  • New York City subway: auditions are optional. Anyone may perform in stations if they follow the MTA's rules, and the MTA's own programme (MTA Music, run by MTA Arts and Design and long known as Music Under New York) gives selected performers scheduled spots. Its official page says no auditions are currently scheduled.
  • Montreal metro: anyone 14 or over can book authorised spots marked by a lyre sign through the STM website, while the Étoiles du métro programme gives auditioned musicians reserved spots at some stations.
  • Barcelona metro: a separate TMB authorisation, awarded through yearly auditions run by the TMB Foundation with the musicians' association AMUC.

Other systems use a permit rather than an audition. Boston's MBTA sells a $25 subway performer permit, Calgary Transit issues a Busker ID with a police information check, and Vancouver's TransLink Busker Program takes applications once a year in the fall.

Who can apply

Read the eligibility rules before you prepare anything. Several programmes are closed to visitors:

  • Toronto's TTC licences are for Ontario residents aged 18 or over.
  • Barcelona's street programme needs residence in the province of Barcelona.
  • Singapore requires foreigners to hold an Employment Pass, ONE Pass or Student Pass. Social Visit Pass holders are not eligible.
  • Quebec City asks for a criminal record check letter, which takes about 14 business days.

Timing matters too. Brisbane's auditions happen only a few times a year, Toronto's every three years, and London's at TfL's announced dates. A visiting busker usually cannot get these licences at short notice.

How to prepare for a busking audition

  1. Play your street set, not your stage set. Panels want to know how you will sound in a mall or a tiled corridor. Pick material that carries without amplification if the venue bans amps, as Brisbane's malls do.
  2. Open strong. With 3 to 5 minutes, as in Brisbane, your first 30 seconds count. Start with your most recognisable piece.
  3. Show range if it is asked for. Barcelona wants at least two hours of repertoire, so bring a written set list.
  4. Bring the paperwork. Photo ID, proof of address and any consent letters if you are under 18.
  5. Be easy to work with. Arrive early, set up quickly and keep your gear compact. Panels notice performers who would block a walkway.

If you miss the audition

Missing a cycle is common, so have a plan B. Many cities with audition-only pitches also have ordinary street busking under a simple permit, or none. In New York you can still play in the subway under the MTA rules. In London you can busk on the street in boroughs such as Westminster or Camden with the right licence. Use the time to record your set, which is often what the next application asks for.

Taking tips at audition-only pitches

Station and mall crowds move fast and many people have no coins on them. A QR code sign lets them tip by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay as they walk past. TipIns is free to download, and by default the person tipping covers the fees, so you receive the full tip. You can make a sign with the tip sign generator.

Common questions

Do you need to audition to busk?

Usually not. Most cities either require a simple permit or nothing at all. Auditions are mostly used for limited, high-demand spots such as Brisbane's malls, the London Underground and Toronto's subway.

How do you get a licence to busk on the London Underground?

You need to pass an audition for TfL's busking scheme and then play only on marked pitches. TfL said the next auditions were expected in late 2026.

Can anyone busk in the New York subway?

Yes. Anyone may perform in subway stations without a permit if they follow the MTA rules, such as no amplification on platforms. The MTA's audition programme is optional.

How long is a busking audition?

It varies. Brisbane's mall auditions last 3 to 5 minutes. Some programmes ask for a video or sample recording instead of a live audition.

Can tourists audition for busking programmes?

Some programmes are limited to residents, such as Toronto's TTC licences and Barcelona's Música al Carrer, and Singapore excludes Social Visit Pass holders. Others, like Perth's permit, do not require you to live in the city.
