Which sign to print
Put the code where the customer is already looking when they pay or when they say thank you. Each layout suits a different spot:
- Counter sign. Half a page, two to a sheet. Stand it in a menu holder next to the till or the card reader.
- Table tent. One page folded in half so it stands on its own, with a code on both sides. Good for tables, bars and reception desks.
- Jar label. A long strip that wraps round a tip jar, so people who reach for coins see the code too.
- Stickers. Twelve round stickers to a page. Use them on takeaway cups, an instrument case, a mirror or the back of a phone.
- Busker sign. A full landscape page with large words, made to be read from a few metres away.
What a tip sign should say
Keep it to a few words that can be read in a glance. “Tips appreciated” and “Thank you!” suit a counter. “No cash? Scan to tip” answers the reason most people give for not tipping. Add your name or the name of the venue under the code, because people tip a person more readily than a square of dots.
Printing so the code scans
- Print at 100% size, not “fit to page”, so the code keeps its size and the cut lines land in the right place.
- A code that is scanned from arm's length should be at least 3 cm wide. For a sign read from further away, allow about 1 cm of code for every 10 cm of distance.
- Matt paper or a matt laminate scans better than gloss under bright lights.
- Scan the printed sign with your own phone before you put it out.
Common questions
Is the tip sign generator really free?
Yes. There is no account, no payment and no limit on how many signs you make. Each sign carries a small “Made free with TipIns” line at the bottom.
Can I use a Venmo, Cash App or PayPal link?
Yes. Choose “Any payment link” and paste it in. Bear in mind that a customer usually needs that same app, or an account with it, to pay you. A TipIns code takes Apple Pay, Google Pay and cards without an app.
Will the QR code expire?
No. The code holds your link itself, with nothing in between, so it keeps working for as long as the link does.
What size paper does it use?
A4 or US Letter. The PDF is laid out for the paper you choose, with dotted lines where a page is cut or folded.
Is my link sent to TipIns?
No. The sign is drawn by your own browser. Nothing you type on this page is uploaded.
