The rules in Brisbane

  • You must pass a 3 to 5 minute audition assessed by Council and Brisbane Economic Development Agency representatives.
  • Amplifiers, PA systems, speakers, keyboards, electric guitars and turntables are not allowed in the malls.
  • Licences last three months, and you must re-audition if you do not renew within six months of issue.
  • Acts using dangerous items such as knives, whips, swords or flammable liquids are not permitted.
  • Under-18s need a parent or guardian's letter of consent, and under-16s must be accompanied at every performance.

Where buskers play in Brisbane

  • Queen Street Mall. Licensed buskers only; the licensed area also covers nearby blocks of Albert, Adelaide, Edward and George streets.
  • Reddacliff Place. Treated as part of the Queen Street Mall licence area.
  • Brunswick Street Mall, Fortitude Valley. Licence required; covers Brunswick Street between Wickham and Ann streets.
  • Chinatown Mall (Duncan Street). Licence required.

Good to know

Auditions happen only a few times a year (the 2026 dates listed were 15 August and 7 November), so visiting buskers cannot get a mall licence at short notice.

Taking card tips on a Brisbane pitch

Whatever the permit position, the audience in Brisbane has the same problem as everywhere else: they liked it, and they have no coins. A QR code on a sign beside your case lets them tip in Australian dollars by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Visitors can pay with a card from home, and nobody needs an app.

  • Print it large. A phone reads a code from about ten times its width, so a 10 cm code works from a metre and an A3 sign from about three.
  • Stand it upright at knee to waist height, with your name and one line saying what it is for.
  • Check the rules above on signs and selling. A tip sign is not a sale, but some cities restrict signs, and most treat CDs and merchandise separately.
  • Playing as a group? One code can split every tip between the members automatically.
