The rules in Barcelona

  • Only accredited musicians may play at the programme's designated street points.
  • Applicants must be over 18 and resident in the province of Barcelona.
  • Applicants need a repertoire of at least two hours and must pass a technical audition.
  • Any amplifier needs a municipal seal certifying it meets the city's volume limits.
  • Accreditations are issued for solo musicians, duos and groups of three to six.

Where buskers play in Barcelona

  • Ciutat Vella (Old Town). The scheme began here in 2004 with 18 authorised points for accredited musicians.
  • Designated points in all ten districts. The programme was expanded to around 50 points citywide.
  • Metro stations. Separate TMB scheme with its own auditions and authorised spots.

Stations and public transport

Playing in the metro needs a separate authorisation from TMB, awarded through yearly auditions run by the TMB Foundation with the street and metro musicians' association AMUC.

Good to know

The residency requirement means visiting buskers generally cannot get an accreditation. A recent call offered only 30 new places.

Taking card tips on a Barcelona pitch

Whatever the permit position, the audience in Barcelona has the same problem as everywhere else: they liked it, and they have no coins. A QR code on a sign beside your case lets them tip in euros by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Visitors can pay with a card from home, and nobody needs an app.

  • Print it large. A phone reads a code from about ten times its width, so a 10 cm code works from a metre and an A3 sign from about three.
  • Stand it upright at knee to waist height, with your name and one line saying what it is for.
  • Check the rules above on signs and selling. A tip sign is not a sale, but some cities restrict signs, and most treat CDs and merchandise separately.
  • Playing as a group? One code can split every tip between the members automatically.
