Short answer: Inside the inner-city area, solo musicians and groups of up to five need a free playing permit (Spielerlaubnis) and may only play in designated spots. Permits are requested online or in person at most one day ahead; larger groups and areas outside the zone fall under the general special-use ordinance.

The rules in Dresden
- Amplifiers. Banned in four spots (parts of Prager Strasse, Judenhof, Schlossplatz east side); elsewhere amplifiers only until 20:00, with the Augustus Bridge spots exempt from that cut-off.
- Collecting money. Selling your own CDs is allowed during the permitted time if the live music stays the focus; the ordinance and info sheet do not mention passing a hat.
- Inner city bounded by Wiener Platz, Koenneritzstrasse, Albertplatz, Carolaplatz, Carolabruecke
- About 37 numbered play spots, e.g. Altmarkt, Neumarkt, Prager Strasse, Postplatz, Theaterplatz, Augustus Bridge
- Quiet hours 13:00 to 15:00 in listed spots (Prager Strasse and Neustadt market spots)
- Each spot once a day Apr to Oct, twice a day Nov to Mar per player or group
Taking card tips on a Dresden pitch
Plenty of people stop to listen and then find they have no coins on them. A QR code on a sign beside your case lets them tip in euros by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay from their own phone. Visitors can pay with a card from home, and nobody needs an app. Check the rule on collecting money above first: it applies to a tip sign too.
- Print it large. A phone reads a code from about ten times its width, so a 10 cm code works from a metre and an A3 sign from about three.
- Stand it upright at knee to waist height, with your name and one line saying what it is for.
- Playing as a group? One code can split every tip between the members automatically.
