The rules in Berlin
- Unamplified street music is allowed without a permit Monday to Saturday from 06:00 to 22:00 (Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg guidance).
- Play for no more than 60 minutes in one place, then move at least 100 metres from spots you have already used.
- Keep at least 60 metres from hospitals and care homes.
- Keep at least 20 metres from homes, from schools during lessons and from churches during services.
- Noise that disturbs people's rest is prohibited between 22:00 and 06:00 and on Sundays and public holidays unless you hold an exemption.
- Setting up amplifier equipment on public streets needs a special use permit, and the district says there is currently no legal basis to approve amplified weekday street music.
- Parks need permission from the district's parks office, and private property needs the owner's consent.
Where buskers play in Berlin
- U-Bahn stations. BVG property: a paid BVG permit is needed and only marked spots may be used.
Stations and public transport
BVG has sold permits for designated spots at around 40 U-Bahn stations at €10 per day, issued on Wednesdays from 7am to 11am at its customer office at Michaelbrücke, with brass instruments not allowed.
Good to know
The details above come from one district's guidance, and other districts such as Mitte or Pankow may apply different rules, so check with the local Bezirksamt.
Taking card tips on a Berlin pitch
Whatever the permit position, the audience in Berlin has the same problem as everywhere else: they liked it, and they have no coins. A QR code on a sign beside your case lets them tip in euros by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Visitors can pay with a card from home, and nobody needs an app.
- Print it large. A phone reads a code from about ten times its width, so a 10 cm code works from a metre and an A3 sign from about three.
- Stand it upright at knee to waist height, with your name and one line saying what it is for.
- Check the rules above on signs and selling. A tip sign is not a sale, but some cities restrict signs, and most treat CDs and merchandise separately.
- Playing as a group? One code can split every tip between the members automatically.
