The rules in Adelaide
- Busking is allowed between 10am and 10pm.
- You may stay no longer than 45 minutes in one location, cannot reuse a location the same day and must move at least 50 m.
- Keep at least 50 m from any other busker, preacher, event or promotion.
- Sound from amplification or percussion must not be heard beyond 50 m.
- Permits last three months and groups are limited to six people, each with their own permit.
- Under-16s may only busk outside school hours and in daylight with written parental permission, and under-12s must be supervised.
- Outside Rundle Mall, the footpath must be at least five metres wide.
Where buskers play in Adelaide
- Rundle Mall. Same free permit, but you must use the marked busking zones within 2 m of the centre of the mall, with a maximum 4 square metre performance area.
- James Place (Rundle Mall). The designated zone where amplified busking is allowed in the mall.
- North Terrace. Busking is not permitted between King William Street and Morphett Street until further notice.
- City squares and Park Lands. Suggested by the council as places to busk, along with Flinders, Melbourne and Jerningham streets.
Stations and public transport
The permit does not cover busking inside Adelaide Railway Station on North Terrace.
Good to know
The permit also does not cover the Adelaide Central Market, and busking in Rundle Mall may be restricted on peak days such as Black Friday. Adelaide Fringe busking permits are separate and last one month.
Taking card tips on a Adelaide pitch
Whatever the permit position, the audience in Adelaide has the same problem as everywhere else: they liked it, and they have no coins. A QR code on a sign beside your case lets them tip in Australian dollars by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Visitors can pay with a card from home, and nobody needs an app.
- Print it large. A phone reads a code from about ten times its width, so a 10 cm code works from a metre and an A3 sign from about three.
- Stand it upright at knee to waist height, with your name and one line saying what it is for.
- Check the rules above on signs and selling. A tip sign is not a sale, but some cities restrict signs, and most treat CDs and merchandise separately.
- Playing as a group? One code can split every tip between the members automatically.
