Not everyone has the same payment app. A TipIns code takes Apple Pay, Google Pay and any card, with no app for the customer. Get a TipIns code →

How it works

  1. Paste a link

Venmo, Cash App, PayPal or your TipIns username.

  2. Choose the words

A short line people can read from across the counter.

  3. Stick it on

Print the label and tape it round the jar, or use the square card.

Why put a QR code on a tip jar

A tip jar only works for people who carry cash, and fewer do every year. A code on the jar gives everyone else a way to tip in the moment they feel like it: they point their phone camera at it, choose an amount and pay.

Where to find your payment link

  • Venmo. Open your profile and share it. The link looks like venmo.com/u/yourname.
  • Cash App. Your $cashtag is your link: cash.app/$yourname.
  • PayPal. Set up a PayPal.Me link: paypal.me/yourname.
  • TipIns. Choose “My TipIns page” and type your username.

A payment app code or a tipping code

A code for a payment app works when the customer uses that same app. Someone with a different app, or a visitor from another country, cannot pay you with it. A TipIns code opens a tip page in the phone's browser, where the customer pays with Apple Pay, Google Pay or a card and needs no app or account. Many people print both for a while and see which one gets used.

Making the label last

  • Print at 100% size. The jar label is 19 cm wide and wraps most standard jars.
  • Cover it with clear tape or laminate it, because a tip jar gets splashed.
  • Put the code on the side that faces the customer, at the height of the jar's middle, not on the lid.
  • Leave the white border round the code. Phones need it to find the code.

Common questions

Does the QR code cost anything?

No. Making and printing the code is free and there is no account. Any fees are the ones your payment app charges for receiving money.

Will the code stop working?

No. It is a static code that holds your link directly, so it works for as long as your link does.

Can customers pay by card with a Venmo or Cash App code?

Only through that app. To take Apple Pay, Google Pay and cards from anyone, with no app on the customer's phone, use a TipIns code.

How big should the code be on a tip jar?

At least 3 cm wide for scanning at arm's length. The jar label prints the code at about 4.5 cm.

Can I put the code in my own design?

Yes. Choose “Code only” and download the code as an SVG or PNG to place in your own artwork.
