Refunds and disputes

Short answer: tips are voluntary and generally not refundable. If a card holder disputes a tip with their bank, the amount can be taken back from your balance, even after it was paid out.

When a tip is disputed

A card holder can ask their bank to reverse a payment. If that happens, the tip shows as "Refunded" in your activity and the amount comes out of your balance. If your balance is not enough, it goes negative and is recovered from future tips. Payouts may be held while a dispute is open.

Avoiding problems

Only take tips for work you did, and never tip yourself or ask friends to tip with cards that are not theirs. Accounts used that way are closed. The full rules are in the terms of service.

Common questions

Can a tip be taken back after it was paid out?

Yes. A disputed tip can be taken back from your balance even after payout; a negative balance is recovered from future tips.
