Short answer: Rome's street art regulation (2012) works through a register of street artists, and performers must tell the city or local police in advance to get a spot and time. Playing is limited to set time windows with a two hour cap, and some famous central piazzas may be closed to music.

The rules in Rome
- Amplifiers. The 2012 ban on amplification and on loud instruments was annulled by a court (TAR Lazio 2013); sound with emissions is still barred near places of worship, schools, hospitals and heritage, and in lanes under 5 m wide.
- Collecting money. Artists may not demand payment; public offerings are free and voluntary (regulation art. 7).
- Windows 10:00 to 13:00 and 16:00 to 20:00 (Oct to May) or 22:00 (Jun to Sep), max 2 hours per window
- Single shows capped at 45 minutes (circle) or 1h30 (walking) when others wait
- Not within 10 m of a church entrance while open, nor near schools or hospitals
Stations and public transport
The metro sets its own rules, so ask before playing in a station.
Taking card tips on a Rome pitch
Plenty of people stop to listen and then find they have no coins on them. A QR code on a sign beside your case lets them tip in euros by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay from their own phone. Visitors can pay with a card from home, and nobody needs an app. Check the rule on collecting money above first: it applies to a tip sign too.
- Print it large. A phone reads a code from about ten times its width, so a 10 cm code works from a metre and an A3 sign from about three.
- Stand it upright at knee to waist height, with your name and one line saying what it is for.
- Playing as a group? One code can split every tip between the members automatically.
