The rules in Cork

  • No performing after 10pm or before 10am.
  • Perform within 3 metres of one of the council's location markers, for no more than two hours, then move at least 50 metres away.
  • Sound in the performer's immediate vicinity must not exceed 75 decibels.
  • Keep 50 metres from other performers and 3 metres from business entrances during opening hours and from homes at all times.
  • Musicians need enough repertoire to play for at least 30 minutes without repeating.
  • Under-16s may only perform with a legal guardian present.
  • You may not charge the public, only accept voluntary donations in a receptacle.

Good to know

Breaches can bring a €75 fixed payment notice, or a fine of up to €1,500 on conviction. Groups of six or more can use a group leader permit capped at €180 per year.

Taking card tips on a Cork pitch

Whatever the permit position, the audience in Cork has the same problem as everywhere else: they liked it, and they have no coins. A QR code on a sign beside your case lets them tip in euros by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Visitors can pay with a card from home, and nobody needs an app.

  • Print it large. A phone reads a code from about ten times its width, so a 10 cm code works from a metre and an A3 sign from about three.
  • Stand it upright at knee to waist height, with your name and one line saying what it is for.
  • Check the rules above on signs and selling. A tip sign is not a sale, but some cities restrict signs, and most treat CDs and merchandise separately.
  • Playing as a group? One code can split every tip between the members automatically.
