Tipping in South Africa

Short answer: Expected. South Africa has a real tipping culture, and many service workers depend on tips. Plan on 10 to 15% at restaurants, more for great service, and carry small cash for petrol attendants and car guards.

Is service included?

Restaurants usually leave the tip to you, but many add a 10% service charge for tables of more than six. Check the bill before adding a tip.

How to tip

Cash is preferred: card tips are appreciated but staff may only receive them at the end of the week or month. Petrol attendants fill your tank and are usually given R5 to 20, more for extras like checking tyres. Informal car guards in reflective vests get a few rand when you return to the car; guides vary from R1 to 5 up to R5 to 10.

What to avoid

Do not drive off without tipping the petrol attendant; it is a normal part of the service, so keep coins and small notes handy.

Work out a tip

The tip calculator is set to South Africa and the local currency: enter the bill, pick a percentage and split it between the table.

Tipping with no cash

When you have no local cash, ask whether a tip can go on the card. More and more guides, drivers and performers show a QR code instead: point your phone camera at it and you can tip by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay without installing anything.

Street performers

Tipping a busker is always optional. If you enjoy the show, a coin or a note in the case is the custom, and more performers now show a QR code so you can tip by card. Rules for buskers by city:
