Tipping in Portugal

A phone scanning a QR code tip sign on a counter

Short answer: Appreciated, not expected. Tipping in Portugal is not mandatory, even when a bill shows a suggested tip. Locals often leave a euro or two or around 5% when pleased, and up to 10% at upscale restaurants. Bread, olives and other starters brought to the table unasked are charged only if you eat them.

Is service included?

A service charge is not normally added. Some restaurants now print a suggested tip on the bill or the card machine; it is optional unless it was clearly stated in advance on the price list. Unrequested starters ("couvert" or "entradas") can be charged only if you eat them; send them back if you do not want them.

How to tip

Cash on the table or handed to the server is common. Some card machines and bills now show a suggested tip; check the amount on the terminal before you confirm, and decline it if you wish. Tips added by card may not reach the server, so cash is safer.

What to avoid

Do not eat the bread and olives if you do not want to pay for them; ask for them to be taken away.

Work out a tip

The tip calculator is set to Portugal and the local currency: enter the bill, pick a percentage and split it between the table.

Tipping with no cash

When you have no local cash, ask whether a tip can go on the card. More and more guides, drivers and performers show a QR code instead: point your phone camera at it and you can tip by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay without installing anything. Workers in Portugal can read how QR code tipping works in Portugal.

Street performers

Tipping a busker is always optional. If you enjoy the show, a coin or a note in the case is the custom, and more performers now show a QR code so you can tip by card. Rules for buskers by city:
