Tipping in the Czech Republic

Short answer: Appreciated, not expected. Tipping in the Czech Republic is voluntary and mainly expected for table service, where rounding up or about 10% is normal for good service. The local habit is to tell the server the total you want to pay rather than leaving coins on the table.

Is service included?

Service charges are not a standard part of Czech bills. Tips are voluntary, and adding a tip to the bill without telling the customer breaks Czech consumer rules; the Czech Trade Inspection Authority says any cover charge must be made known to you in advance.

How to tip

When the server brings the bill, say the total you want to pay including the tip, or write it on the bill. Many card terminals now show tip options, including 0%. Some people still leave a cash tip because card tips can be pooled or reach staff later.

What to avoid

Do not tip in government offices or on public transport, where it can look like a bribe, and check your bill for any tip added without your agreement.

Work out a tip

The tip calculator is set to the Czech Republic and the local currency: enter the bill, pick a percentage and split it between the table.

Tipping with no cash

When you have no local cash, ask whether a tip can go on the card. More and more guides, drivers and performers show a QR code instead: point your phone camera at it and you can tip by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay without installing anything. Workers in the Czech Republic can read how QR code tipping works in the Czech Republic.

Street performers

Tipping a busker is always optional. If you enjoy the show, a coin or a note in the case is the custom, and more performers now show a QR code so you can tip by card. Rules for buskers by city:
